Forum on Freight Decarbonization: e-FAST India at the NDC TIA India Conference

Date:

The roundtable, held as part of the closing conference of Phase I of the India component of the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia (NDC-TIA), discussed and developed actionable strategies for accelerating the decarbonization of freight transport in India. Participants focused on leveraging the e-FAST India initiative to identify data gaps, integrate road and rail freight movement, and share pilot and demonstration experiences to explore implementable solutions for the sector.

The session was chaired by Shri Sudhendu J. Sinha (Adviser, Infrastructure Connectivity & E-Mobility, NITI Aayog) and moderated by Ms. Sharvari Patki (Program Head, Electric mobility, WRI India) and Mr. Amegh Gopinath (India Component Lead - NDC-Transport Initiative for Asia, GIZ).

Objective:

The roundtable leveraged e-FAST India to address data gaps, integrate road and rail freight, and share pilot experiences. Discussions focused on practical solutions for decarbonization, aligning with national and global climate goals. The interactive approach fostered open dialogue and knowledge sharing among participants.

Discussion Points:

The session outlined and explored three key strategies for improving freight sustainability using the Avoid, Shift, Improve (ASI) framework

  • Avoid: Utilizing data and technology to improve freight planning, efficiency, and digitalization, while addressing data gaps and leveraging existing platforms.

  • Shift: Shifting from road to rail to reduce the carbon footprint of freight transport by developing dedicated freight corridors and optimizing multi-modal transportation for time and cost efficiency.

  • Improve: Learning from existing demonstration projects with focus on scalability, integrating ZETs and charging networks, showcasing available e-truck models, and modernizing freight fleets through financing and incentives.
