This issue brief, developed by e-FAST India partners Climate Group and pManifold Business Solutions, examines the role of Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck (MHDT) electrification within India's burgeoning e-commerce sector. With projections indicating a market valuation of approximately USD 292.3 billion by 2028, the imperative for sustainable logistics solutions, particularly concerning carbon emissions and operational efficiencies, is paramount. This analysis underscores the critical contribution of electric MHDTs towards fostering a more environmentally sound, economically viable, and resilient freight transportation system. 

Key Findings and Observations: 

  • E-commerce Expansion and e-MHDT Integration: The substantial growth of India's e-commerce landscape has led to an increasing reliance on e-MHDTs for parcel transport. 
     
  • Challenges to Electrification and Strategic Opportunities: While initial electrification efforts in India have predominantly focused on light-duty vehicles (two and three-wheelers), e-commerce entities are actively investigating the adoption of electric Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicles (e-MHDVs) as a strategy to mitigate freight costs. Nevertheless, significant impediments persist, including substantial upfront capital expenditure, variability in charging tariffs, protracted homologation processes, and an underdeveloped charging infrastructure. 
     
  • Industry Leadership and Decarbonisation Initiatives: Prominent e-commerce stakeholders, notably Amazon India, Flipkart, and IKEA, are demonstrating proactive engagement by integrating electric mobility solutions into their operational paradigms. These initiatives are aligned with ambitious corporate sustainability objectives and broader strategies for climate risk mitigation. 
     
  • Comparative Performance Assessment: The report presents a detailed comparative analysis of electric trucks and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) trucks. This assessment encompasses critical parameters such as acquisition cost, homologation duration, salvage value, financing mechanisms, and charging time. The findings substantiate the long-term feasibility and benefits associated with e-truck adoption, despite initial transitional challenges. 
     
  • Strategic Policy Recommendations for Accelerated Adoption: To facilitate and expedite the widespread deployment of e-MHDTs in India's e-commerce sector, the brief delineates a series of actionable policy recommendations, including setting clear sector-specific targets, enhancing charging infrastructure (depot, ultra-fast en route, and battery swapping), and developing robust financing mechanisms like concessional loans and green bonds. The brief also advocates for dedicated pilot programmes, public-private collaboration, and streamlined regulations for permits and taxation. Standardising battery specifications and investing in R&D for battery technology, vehicle design, and indigenous charging infrastructure have also been identified as crucial for sustained growth.
