Event Introduction:
This session organised by C40 cities and Climate Policy Initiative on "Adoption Pathways for Electric Truck Deployment" explored innovative strategies to accelerate the large-scale adoption of electric freight vehicles (EFVs). The session brought together industry leaders, financial experts, and stakeholders from the freight ecosystem, and provided a collaborative platform to discuss on themes including demand generation pathways, new business and financing mechanisms that can support EFV adoption.
Key Takeaways of the event:
- EFV adoption is driven by consigner interest, especially for closed-loop applications. However, higher initial costs remain a barrier. For open-loop scenarios, enhancing charging infrastructure and reducing capital costs are crucial for large-scale viability.
- Innovative financing models, with longer loan tenures and credit enhancement to improve affordability, are needed. While debt financing is a primary driver, effective asset-liability management and credit enhancement funds are essential to scaling up e-truck adoption.
- Operational leases face challenges without a robust resale market. As a feasible alternative, financing leases are gaining traction. Business models like battery-as-a-service are promising but require time to mature and establish steady cash flows for fleet operators.
- Targeted incentives are critical to lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) for e-trucks, making them competitive with diesel trucks. Lessons from countries like the U.S. and China show that effective regulations and incentives can significantly drive adoption.
