What is e-FAST?

What is e-FAST?

e-FAST India (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport – India) is the country's first platform to facilitate collaboration between government stakeholders and private sector partners — Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Logistic Service Providers (LSPs), financers, producers, and Charge Point Operators (CPOs) — to shape strategies and actions that support freight electrification at scale.

Why is Freight Electrification Important?

Road is the predominant mode of goods movement in India

Freight commercial vehicles form a meager portion of all registered vehicles in the country

Partners on e-FAST

The freight sector plays a key role in India’s economy enabling the delivery of goods and critical resources. During the COVID crisis, the freight sector sustained its growth, despite disruptions, ensuring a steady movement of essential goods and medical supplies across India.

By transitioning from diesel to zero-emission technologies at an accelerated pace, India will enjoy significant clean air and climate benefits, while growing its global technology and economic leadership. To reach this goal, strong public and private sector cooperation and collaboration is needed. e-Fast India is making these critical connections and facilitating a brighter future for India and the world.

Trucking demand in India is expected to grow fourfold by 2050. A timely transition to Zero Emission Trucks will help reduce trucking emissions by over 40% and slash diesel demand by 838 billion litres through the next three decades. With a strong policy push complemented by dedicated investments in ZET corridors and associated infrastructure and a focus on financing de-risking measures, India can spearhead the zero-emission trucking revolution.

Inspired by “ekyam balam samanjasya”, eFAST brings all freight industry stakeholders together to explore collaboration, encourage cross-learning and support each other to move towards a common goal of clean freight in India.

A roadmap for decarbonisation of road freight sector is essential for India to meet its NDC commitments. Towards this, the e-FAST platform serves as a central hub connecting various stakeholders in the eco-system. Such a platform will enhance knowledge sharing, improve collaboration, communication among stakeholders, and enhance coordination which will eventually accelerate conceptualisation, design and adoption of innovative products and services geared towards achieving decarbonisation targets in India’s road freight sector.

Coordinated efforts are essential to establish a national roadmap for the zero-emission vehicles transition and accelerate investments in e-truck deployment in India. With the support from the U.S. and U.K. governments under the ZEV-EMI, WBCSD will help mobilize businesses for co-investment along the e-freight value chain. Collaborating with E-FAST partners, we aim to streamline initiatives across demand aggregation, financing, TCO modeling, piloting and policy implementation.

Electrifying trucks would bring big benefits to cities, the people, and the Indian economy overall: cleaner air and better climate. Private sector and government must work together to enable deployment of e-trucks and infrastructure together in a way affordable to shippers and trucking companies. Aggregating demand by committed cargo owners is a first step. Smart Freight Centre is excited to partner with Niti Aayog and the Indian Government as well as fellow NGOs on the E-fast platform to kick start this important movement to decarbonizing Indian road transport.

The Indian trucking industry is the sixth largest market in the world with medium and heavy-duty trucks accounting for 2% of all registered vehicles and 45% of all on-road emissions. The e-FAST platform by NITI Aayog will be catalytic in accelerating the electrification of trucking in India with right market policies, collaborations and private sector investments. Climate Group’s EV100+ is thrilled to partner with e-FAST to drive corporate demand for EVs.
